Hazards
The frequency of severe hydro-meteorological events is rising in many regions of the world as a consequence of climate change. Society must be ready to make landscapes more resilient. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are inspired and supported by nature and provide environmental, social and economic benefits, while helping to build resilience against climate change. OPERANDUM has been built to deliver tools and methods to demonstrate the efficacy of a variety of locally-adapted NBS, involving multiple stakeholders in the process, such as citizens, associations, business players and policy makers.
Hazards
Across the world, we are facing challenges like disaster risk everyday. Some of us are living in areas where disasters are very likely. Which challenges are you facing in your area? Flood, landslides, coastal erosion, drought, something else?
Flooding
The fear of flooding is a major perceived risk. Floods affect many areas, such as agriculture, infrastructure, local businesses as well as the tourism sector. To deal with the risk of flooding, OPERANDUM has implemented multiple Nature-based Solutions.
Heatwaves
Heatwaves are among the most dangerous of natural hazards and cause health problems and a higher mortality. To deal with the risk of heatwaves, OPERANDUM has implemented a Nature-based Solution (NbS) in Hong Kong.
Landslides
Landslides are caused by disturbances in the natural stability of a slope and defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth. To deal with the risk of landsliding, OPERANDUM has implemented multiple Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
Coastal erosion & storm surge
Coastal erosion is the loss of land along the shoreline due to the natural removal of sediments or bedrock from the shoreline. It is often associated with extreme weather events such as coastal storms, storm surge and flooding.
Eutrophication
Eutrophication can be explained as when a body of water becomes enriched in nutrients that enhance the growth of aquatic plants. This growth, in turn, reduces the availability of oxygen and limits life under water.
